Is this a variegated Asplenium scolopendrium?

Post by Chad »

I'm not a fern expert, but am surprised by Asplenium scolopendrium.

It is supposed to like alkaline soils, but comes up all over the garden, including in the tunnel here, all with acid soil.

Variations show up occasionally.  I have one that is mildly crested and this one...

Both the smaller leaves started off with the horizontal banding, but faded to all green.

Is this variegation, or a physiologically unhappy plant?

I have that occasionally, on my very chalk soil! Every now and then it'll throw up a 'sport'. It either reverts back to green, or withers away. It's very forgiving of soil conditions anyway, growing in pots reserved for rhododendrons as well as every available nook and cranny.
