I wonder how I managed to do that.

By being human.

I think most of have done this at some stage.

Seeds under a fruiting plant are assumed to come from that plant and not the tree above, or the plant next door.

It is less embarrassing than nurturing incidental weeds to flowering size.

I have carefully grown figwort [Scrophularia nodosa] to flowering size before being sure something was wrong!

Reading back the cascabela makes a big fat apple as a fruit so we should have picked up on that between us.

I did this recently - saw a nice convolvulus-type thing in Cyprus and collected some seed. Turned out to be something completely different and fairly ordinary.

I think the stupidest thing I did, and I am hesitant to admit it, is attempt to germinate 'seed' I collected in Mexico of Bocconia frutescens that ended up being buds :oops:

I once went into the garden for some chives that I needed for a recipe I was cooking. It was pointed out to me later that the plant I had picked from was a tufted sedge. I didn't think it had added much to the flavour of the dish :oops:
