Alyogyne hugellii

Post by MartinNicklin »

Does anyone grow this beautiful flower and have actual evidence of its hardiness? I ordered one from Urban Jungle about a month ago and it arrived like this:

Image

It was posted overnight and arrived with me the next day. Although cold, it didn’t get below 0 here and the nursery insists it wasn’t sent out in this state. In other words, the implication is that it happened overnight!

I’ve kept it on a warm windowsill as suggested by the sellers but there is not a scrap of evidence of life in the plant.

I’ve read conflicting reports of hardiness. Cross Common is selling it with a tolerance of -5 and a few other sources suggest similar. Others state that it is completely intolerant of frost, requiring +5 to survive and +10 to remain evergreen. If it will survive a night, boxed, at around 0, then I’m sadly convinced that I was sent a dead plant. They have offered to replace it but I’ve asked for a photo before they send it. In the same package was Brugmansia (look away now Paul) Snowbank which is growing fine. Of the two, I would have expected the Brug to have suffered the journey with more ill-effect.

I once had one and it I think died in the pot. Meaning it does not like a small pot. It grows here as a drought tolerant shrub. Echium and Wigandia also hate potted life.

My pictures were taken in Santa Cruz botanic gardens, soil looked quite light, but other than admiring the flowers I know nothing about them!

They are offered by a couple of growers but I'm convinced they lack the hardiness that some claim. They are such a beautiful, almost artificial looking flower that I'm sure they would be in people's collections if they were that bit tougher. Urban Gardens are sending another. They said next week but looking at night temperatures I think this week would have been a safer bet. I've also got the variety Santa Cruz on order.

Well I was sent a better replacement plant and the first flower is out today. Smaller than I expected but a lovely colour backlit by the sun.

I also sent for the variety Santa Cruz. Tiny plant but I have seen images of this cultivar in pots covered in bloom so I hope mine gets to that stage. Lovely colour though … or at least it looks pleasant to me with my colour-blindness.
