A Happy New Year to all on this cold and frosty morning

+1.3C in my greenhouse at 10:00am this morning, brrrr.
I discovered the limitations of fleece for frost protection last night. My tibouchina had been in flower so I put a couple of layers of fleece over it at dusk. It subsequently rained and then froze so this morning the plant was doubled over with the weight of it and frozen into into a very stiff ball of trouble. I should have left it alone to thaw out before removing it, what a mess :roll:

May this year be better for all than the last one managed!

We had our first frost for 20 months last night.

And it wasn't forecast!

Hail laying nearly an inch on the ground as it got dark.

Back to +5C now and all the hail melted.

Last night Cornwall was briefly sealed off as all the major road routes in were blocked with accidents on 'high' roads.

Sowing fern spore this afternoon; very definitely inside!

Scrunched my way around to check all was well only to discover the storm over Christmas had blown out 8 sheets of glass from one of the greenhouses, counting ourselves very lucky that the dog didn't go across the large amounts of shattered glass
(no harm to plants as all in that house are perfectly hardy) was able to replace the glass today from my spares stash, so I will restock that later. - not a great start to the year! but there have been worse.

It's all a bit 'meh' so far.
Replaced the polycarbonate that was claimed by that bitch bella yesterday and today I removed the outside lights. Now I can get to the tri annual/quadrennial pruning and pollarding that has been put on hold for, well, years!

Know what you mean, its so easy to put off some jobs, I have been dropping hints all Christmas that my son and heir might like to come and lend a hand with his chain saw - not worked so far may have to resort to bribery! :)
At least all the snow and ice has gone, today was half decent

I know the feeling. Early last year we had a couple of blow outs of greenhouse polycarbonate panels, one of them has never been found.
No problem now as I came up with a way of securing them in place. Purchased threaded steel rods and nuts and drilled holes in the aluminium ridges above the panels. Pushed the rods through and tightened up the whole structure. :D
