Little baby green things.

Post by JohnJearrard »

Not much going on in the garden this morning, but worth a look in the first bright day for weeks. A few little baby green things that I was suddenly quite proud of.

Image
Araucaria araucana. Just a small one even though I've had it for years. Wish I had planted it out when I got it. I have three like this and if I could think of a space they would be in the ground by now.

Image
Araucaria angustifolia. Did get planted when I got it and now growing well. Unfortunately placed where it is always against the sky so it always looks black in pictures.

Image
Araucaria (angustifolia x araucana), seedling from Mark Fillan. Getting rather overgrown and needs untangling and staking.

Image
Araucaria bidwillii. Given it years ago by Paul Bonavia and it did well in the greenhouse so about five years ago I planted it out and it has been growing well.

Image
Araucaria heterophylla. Given it two years ago when a friend moved house. Planted it outside and expected it to die but it came through last winter and still looking ok this year.

Lovely collection John! I don't know how I managed to miss the A.angustifolia on my visit, but will keep a look out for it next time.
Best wishes and happy growing for 2025!

Wow, I never expected you could grow A. bidwillii or A. heterophylla in the UK. What's the absolute minimum temp you get there? Your A. angustifolia is lovely.

Don't know about absolute minimum, but we have had minus 8 degC a couple of times in recent years, minus 5 degC would be unwelcome but not unusual for me. I'm surprised I still have the A. heterophylla, I've lost it outside once before but it has prospered in an unheated greenhouse (until it grew to big and I killed it trying to move it).

John - It's great to see these plants thriving but even better to see you posting too! Hope you have a healthy and accident-free 2025.

All the best for 2025 Paul, hope to see you soon. Given up most of the dangerous sports like head-diving off of greenhouses. Going out later to try jumping up and down on thin ice, sounds like a laugh! :D

Hope things are going well Rob, see you soon.
