Re: Melianthus major - advice please

I must have missed the original thread. 'Purple Haze' looks absolutely amazing as does Andy's flowering standard version.
I never got Melianthus major to flower myself. It would always collapse into a sloppy mess by the middle of December but eventually return in midsummer, until it finally gave up trying.

I could imagine 'Purple Haze' combining beautifully with all sorts of flowers and foliage. Good luck Paul :D

I am surprised it hasn't found its way into the nursery trade by now.

Ouch!
It doesn’t look very promising, but I guess that depends upon how/if it recovers and if it weakens the plant beyond redemption should it collapse every winter.
Does anyone know how long it has been planted?

I don't mind herbaceous foliage plants, and replaced my bog standard Melianthus with Macleaya cordata.... we moved house before it really took off. Is it as invasive as some say?

Ooops! It was a few years ago now, but I may have left the new owners quite a few horticultural headaches. Sasa palamata was just beginning to run riot and I was involved in an ongoing tournament of Tetrapanax tennis with the neighbours.

Sasa palmata! I hope you didn't leave a forwarding address :D
Honestly, there should be laws against that.
