I'm not totally sure, but I think it's a picture of a plant?

Starting information.

No stamens so probably a female spike from a dioecious plant.

Trifolate leaf and six petals.

Grown by Charlie so probably a climber.

It isn't a Lapageria, and Charlie's other 'big thing' is the Holboellia/Akebia family; the Lardizabalaceae.

Google 'Lardizabalaceae flowers' and you find




But that links to a journal behind a pay wall, but we know we are on the right track now.

Wikipedia for Lardizabalaceae gives only 9 genera to check, and I know 5 of them and can be confident it isn't them.

So google 'flowers' with;

Archakebia. No direct 'hit'. So no photo on the internet; unlikely to be in cultivation. And 'Monoecious or seldom dioecious.' according to the online Flora of China.

Boquila. Not that, but a plant that can 'mimic the host’s leaves in a phenomenon called mimetic polymorphism'. New information to me!

Sargentodoxa. Not that.

Sinofranchetia . Bingo. And a monotypic genus so it has to be Sinofranchetia chinensis.

4 minutes to work it out and 20 minutes to post this!

Hoped it would keep you amused a bit longer!

Its a bit more interesting in fruit which appears to be edible (well I didn't get ill!) but rather unpalatable certainly not sweet like the Holboellia and Akebia It also seems a lot more reliable at producing fruit that the other two given that I only have the one plant.

My Lardizabala is yet to flower (I grew it from seed so not sure what that fruit is like)

Boquila, is indeed a weird thing, mine has tried to flower once but not again and yes the leaves do appear a bit different depending on what its growing through

I am finding it tricky to find something not too obvious (especially as Chad knows the garden!)

It is an 'Aunt Sally' for me; I know this plant so shan't name it yet.

Note the sharply pointed sepals, and the the blooms are not opening in strict order up the spike.

I think I remember it has a square stem [not very visible in the picture] and tripartite leaves.

An herbaceous perennial smelling of 'cedar'.
