It must be summer

Post by Chrisg »

The sun comes out and everyone vanishes

It is quite scary how much difference a few days of hot weather make to the garden. The succulents are loving it, the alpines are complaining, it has finished off the arisaemas and I had to find a new home for a couple of potted acers.

I'm hoping the Cannas et al make the most of this warm spell, here in the frozen north my basjoo is only pushing out its second leaf!

The roses are magnificent this year and for once the evenings are warm so we have been sat out making the most of it. hoping the several plants I put out earlier this year have had time to get going!

Just as mine were finally about to bloom too. A.costatum has given up the struggle, and A.ringens is not looking very promising either.

Here the summer weather has brought out the Libellula depressa and Aeshna cyanea around my pond. Before you start thinking 'there's a couple of plant names I don't recognise', they are in fact Dragonflies :)

I saw our first dragonflies yesterday, I hadn't realized they sort of coordinate their hatching, makes sense I just never thought about it before!

Mines throwing a spike up! I'm rather pleased as I'm a proper novice with the succulents and this was overwintered outdoors in a 2 litre pot.

Two of mine are flowering this year. They did take a while to come back after they were so badly cut to the ground. Hopefully this bit of a warmer summer will get them properly going ready for next year.

That's good news, then they is hope for me yet. I have three pots of them and was hoping for a good display this year.
