Beschorneria Septentrionalis

Post by Wayne »

Despite this being quite common, I still cannot fail to be mesmerized by the ridiculousness of the flower stem. What else screams this colour? It's not subtle is it

They are rather eye catching. I bought one in flower at the Savill gardens plant fair last year and planted it out straight away. It seemed to me that the effort of flowering had completely knackered it as the plant just faded away once the flowering was over. By this spring there was nothing left worth keeping so I hope yours doesn't go the same way.

If it's an etablished plant it should resprout after flowering, forming new crowns. When the clumps get big enough with enough growth points of varying ages they can flower almost every year, mine hasn't got to that point yet!

This is the third year of owning it, bought it in flower , last year did nothing, so brought inside the manshed over winter and it has decided to throw a flower stem. Otherwise it was going to the great compost in the sky.

I planted a large group of these Beschorneria's in a clients sunny front garden. They have all matted together now and almost completely cover the area, they flower annually with very little effect on the looks of the clump.

My only problem with this plant is the leaves damage easily, whether that be by someone knocking into them or the occasional snail damage.
