PUSHING THE BORDERS

Having fallen in love with these on Tresco in September 1999 I managed to get hold of some bulbs from Madeira the following year from an area that had been burnt over by forest fires, what has puzzeled me since is both the Tresco plants and Madeira plants flower Late September on while mine here are already in flower (as per normal) and will be over by the time we head for Madeira - so what is triggering flowering time? had thought it was wet at the end of summer but certainly not this year!

We have quite a clump now and since I realised feeding while in leaf was a good idea we get lots of flowers :)

Amaryllis belladonna flowering and timing seems a bit random.
There was a discussion a few years back on GOTE that led me down a few rabbit holes.
The introduction of one article starts: Flowering of Amaryllis belladonna occurs in late summer which is different to many
other flowering bulbous species, which flower in autumn, winter, spring and early summer. A.
belladonna exhibits active growth in winter with the senescence of their leaves at the
beginning of summer before the bulb goes dormant. As several environmental factors can
affect bulb development and play a major role in flower development (De Hertogh and Le
Nard, 1993) it remains unclear which are the contributing factors to initiate flower
development in A. belladonna.
Here mine don't flower until September generally until the first couple of weeks of September, can be as early as mid August and as late as mid October.
