Unusual plants at Chester Cathedral

I was there yesterday and came across what I assume to be Osmunda regalis cristata. I’ve always loved Osmunda, especially in a waterside setting and indeed attempt to grow it at home. However, I have never seen this form before and I think it’s really lovely.







I’ve been to many of the UK’s cathedrals but not many have plantings right up against the walls of the building itself. The planting is actually quite lovely and there are some really plants I wouldn’t normally expect to see in such a setting. The Garth within the cloisters was particularly nice. I’ll attach a few photos to give a feel.















































And of course what makes it so special are its stained glass windows.

Thanks for the post Martin. I wasn't aware that there is a 'cristata' form of Osmunda regalis, very nice.
I grow the usual form next to my wildlife pond. Although the soil close to the pond doesn't retain any more moisture than the surrounding area, it seems to be happy enough even during this long dry spell.

Hats off to the Cathedral ground staff, excellent job.

Good find Martin. My favourite location for exotic planting is the church as St. Just In Roseland.

Been to St Just a couple of times John. A real paradise with those palms and lush planting. I’d love to live down there.

Same here with our Osmanda although I did take pity on it and give it a drink today
