Evening Mini-meet: Morrab Gardens

Post by Chad »

I have lived in Cornwall for nearly 25 years but have never been to Morrab Gardens in Penzance.

The time has come!

Mini-meet at 'The Bandstand' in Morrab Gardens at 1800 on Wednesday 19th June.

I have no idea how long it will take to view; join me and find out.

Well that got a lot of interest!

I'm hoping lots of people who don't get to the day time meets will come.

Otherwise I'll have a quite look round on my own.

If only I lived closer to Cornwall. I had a look on-line and it looks very pleasant, as do most of the gardens and parks in the county, quite a few of which I have visited. I came one step closer to retirement this week, which would have allowed me from next month more scope to get down to these Cornish meets, at least a couple of times a year ... but I have been offered a new contract which I couldn't refuse.

I hope you get some takers Chad. You certainly champion these gardens and "mini-meets" admirably down in Cornwall.

There are usually a few people who turn up unannounced.

But if not I'll be OK on my own.

It is nice to have people who know more than me though: I like being told what I'm looking at!

People who know more than you do Chad???!!! I can't believe that happens very often! I think I'd probably be way out of my depth in your company.

I only post on the lacunae in my ignorance Martin.

I try not to join in discussions whereof I know nothing.

That way I look more knowledgeable than I am.

Coming from Kent, it's hard to get to the Scilly Isles in one day so we have an overnight stop in Penzance when visiting. Last year we found ourselves staying near Morrab gardens and had a look around - it's definitely worth a visit if you're able.

Three of us wandered around Morrab for an hour.

And a fourth was trying to find us with his satnav. He drove round Penzance several times before giving up and going home.

I'm glad the other two knew more than me, or I wouldn't have known half of what I was looking at.

I think the high spot was a Brachychiton populneus. Though several of the Sphaeropteris medullaris were magnificent. There was a [disputed amongst us] shrub with few leaves that I think was an unhappy Telanthophora grandifolia.

Rob regaled us with tales of how dangerous the gardens are with drug dealing and 'yob' behaviour. The worst we witnessed was a 'boom box' [does that date me?] that wasn't playing Mozart.

John took some pictures, but is now away for a while. I hope he will post some pictures when he is back, particularly of a noble shrub that wasn't a Viburnum, since it had alternate leaves.

August is full of tourists, so the next 'meet' is Sept 1st, the Tremenheere rare plant fair.
