Parathesis leptopa in bloom

Post by David F »

This has definitely become one of my new favorite plants in the garden, blooming for the first time after growing it on from a small plant purchased at the San Francisco Botanical Garden back in 2015. It’s a Cloudforest plant from southern Mexico, in the Primulaceae family. I had no idea what the blooms would look like, and the buds took over 2 months to open from apparently full sized buds. The flowers have proven long lasting as well, it’s already 5 weeks in bloom and still going strong.

This isn’t really available in the trade here in California, but undoubtedly would be popular if people knew of it. Here’s some recent photos of the 5’ tall plant in a 15 gallon container in my garden. Pink may not be everyone’s cup of tea in their garden, but it’s one of my favorites in my own garden, especially when it’s this vivid shade of pink! It’s one of two Primulaceae Cloudforest trees in my garden, I’ve got a nice Ardisia venosa as well, also incredibly showy in first bloom earlier this spring, but through blooming in early May.

I think you mean Ardisia venosa.
