Clethra arborea

Post by AndyC »

I spotted this lovely small tree flowering in the valley garden at Tregrahan and decided it is a 'must have' plant. I am now in the process of aquiring one.

I understand that it is not particularly hardy but believe that, as well as the Tregrahan planting, there is a mature specimen growing in Caerhays Castle gardens.

Does anyone know of any other plantings of this beauty in Cornwall?

According to Trees and Shrubs Online there are examples at Trewithen and Coleton Fishacre, on the S Devon coast.

I know it is scented, but scented of what?

Where have you sourced it from, I haven't seen it for sale.

I found it for sale at PlantenTuin Esveld in the Netherlands https://esveld.shop/

I placed an online order (which was more of an enquiry as I wasn't given the opportunity to pay for it), I had to give them my email address.
They replied explaining that they don't ship to UK customers directly , but if I was prepared to wait until October it could be sent via a UK nursery..

I said 'Yes please'.

A day later I had an email from Poppins Plants https://www.poppinsplants.co.uk/ in which I was given the cost to include the delivery to the uk, the custom’s clearance, the plant passport , handling , packing and delivery to your door by DHL. I was asked to confirm whether or not I would like to go ahead for an October delivery.

I said 'Yes please'.

I then received another email from Poppins with a payment link.

So now all I have to do is wiat for notification of a delivery date.

Not cheap but all very civilised.
