Thats done the trick!! Greenhouse cladding

Post by charlie »

Yesterday I spent the day installing additional shade for the mist propagator and one of our liner greenhouses that have both been getting far to hot causing all sorts of problems with propagation (wish I had done it 2 months ago)

This morning "Murphey's Law" (Sod's law in my family!!) has kicked in and it is grey and the ground looks damp

Out of interest the polycarbonate sheeting I have used claims to reflect heat while allowing light through does anyone else use it? anyway the good news is that it does actually seem to be working

My greenhouse is twin wall polycarbonate Charlie and I would definitely say it doesn’t get as hot as a traditional glass structure.

I cant believe how good this sheeting is proving even with full sun its pleasant inside the greenhouses we have put in on (its on the outsides) and it doesnt seem to have affectedthe light levels at all

I am sure its sold by various places we used Wicks as their delivery charge was most reasonable!

My apologies Charlie, I had only previousely briefly scanned your initial post and only now realise that you asked a question that I can answer from experience.
I agree with Martin that using twin walled polycarbonate instead of glass does mean the inside remains a bit cooler in hot weather. I also believe it keeps the inside warmer in winter.
My 8 x 12 has only been down to minus 0.5 once since erecting it seven years ago and that largely because I hadn't completely closed the door properly.

The one negative I have found is that the structure is much lighter in weight and less rigid than my previous glass equivalent. I had to use threaded rods positioned through the external vertical ribs and tightenend up with nuts to make the structure rigid enough to stand up to the many storms we get through the winters. Even that was not enough to prevent the whole thing from exploding when storm Goretti hit. Even then there was no damage that couldn't be fixed once I found all the bits that had blown off around the garden and next door.

I get my twin walled polycarbonate for my other winter structures, e.g. the agave attenuata house, from the roofing superstore https://www.roofingsuperstore.co.uk/bro ... heets.html
Excellent service and good prices
