Post by charlie »

You can't fail to notice them at this time of year Ribes sanguinea the flowering currant, common and hardy yes, but I still like these darker flowered forms

Sadly the fruit is not that exciting although the birds seem to love it and small plants appear about the garden from time to time

You don't see Ribes speciosum as often which is a shame as its a great wall shrub

Last year I discovered Ribes oderatum which has strongly scented flowers and aromatic fruits

My favourite Charlie is Ribes Nigrum..........in a pie!

I grew Sanguinea at my last place but I don't currently have any. I've never grown Speciosum but to me they are certainly more architectural and attractive than Sanguinea.

Ordoratum looks quite similar to the 'Golden currant' Ribes Aureum, are the fruits edible?

Yes the fruit is quite tasty typical black currants, Clove scented, it is sometimes called Buffalo currant, only snag appears to be the need for male and female plants to get fruit
