Couple of Pan Global experiments flowering!

Post by charlie »

Each time I visit Nick at Pan Global I nearly always come away with something he has collected on his travels with absolutely no idea whether its going to grow or what the flowers will be like, so its always a bit exciting when stuff flowers for the first time

This evergreen Euonymus species is tall tree climbing and survives well outside but the top nearly always gets burnt, I suspect because I can't give it a tree and it it gets caught by radiation frost above its wall, but this year I have noticed it is going to flower for the first time, I suspect the flowers will be small green and boring but hold out hopes for something a bit more interesting in the autumn if it sets seed. In the mean time it has nice shiny evergreen leaves!

The other flowering is according to its label a Stauntonia but looks more like a Holboellia (but now the Botanists have combined the two I suppose that doesn't matter)

Hi Charlie, I must admit I'm not a lover of your Euonymus, personally I think its a bit ordinary. However I do have a Holboellia, yes, that's what we call them up here regardless of the experts. I had to cut mine hard back in the beginning of the week as it was growing into everything around it and swamping everything. I must say I had mixed fortunes with mine for the first 5 or 6 years it did nothing, to the extent I forgot I had it! After that it started to grow slowly and I rediscovered it. For the last couple of years It is unstoppable. I suspect the reason for this is my dry sandy soil which I didn't like, however I think its roots have reached the water table and there is no stopping it. An ideal plant for a jungle garden, if you can keep it under control. ;)
