PUSHING THE BORDERS

Thought I would move the eremurus thread over so can track progress.

So end of March


April 7th


And today


Going to have to upgrade the cloche to the bigger one.

Then splashed out at the plant fair for a new one, eremurus robustus, it is massive (or at least shows promise of getting big)



The nursery confirmed the posts on the other forum saying that it doesn't like being crowded, they also suggested more water and feed at this time of year which was interesting. They had another variety as well, but someone picked it up just as I was reaching for it, and I was there early for one :evil:

Despite getting there early and having an eye out, I didn't see that at the fair, who had that or did you preorder it?

It was from Steventon Road Nursery. They were selling mainly alpines, but had 3 eremurus. They obviously had a few at they nursery as we were talking about splitting them and how to get the octopus roots into a manageable pot.

I am pleased to say that even after only a day under a glass cloche it is starting to open which was my main concern.

mine are well up out of the ground, only noticed them when I was putting some bedding in tonight

I've tried these a couple of times with tubers from Jaques Amand (weird looking things). Both times they flowered, but died in the first winter. I probably stifled them a bit through ignorance, but it can't have helped that I planted them just below the surface as I'd read that they like this. I don't suppose they liked being frozen though.

What soil did you plant them in? The suggestion seems to be that laying the tubers on gravel to ensure they don't rot is one of the key aspects to getting them through.

I just planted them in the borders Chris. They were in raised beds which have quite a bit of grit, sand and organic material mixed in and so are quite well drained, but not on a gravel bed. I'll try this if I give them another go.
