Show us your ugliest plant you love.

Post by Chrisg »

Everyone has at least one "ugly plant". I use that term loosely to mean something that does not meet the standard convention of pretty flowers or shape or leaves.

There can be several reasons for keeping them: It is rare/hard to grow, it is a deformed form of something pretty, it is so ugly you don't know why you keep it

These are not plants that you have killed etc, but plants that you actually like partly because they are ugly and as such instead of hiding them away, you often have them on display, or maybe that is just me

Anyway I though I would give them a thread of their own, to avoid us becoming just a pretty plant forum . So post pictures of your favourite "ugly" plant.

Here are two of mine, firstly a particularly knarly agave titonata.

Agave titonata

This is not a pretty form of the plant by anyone standard, but those spines are nothing like anything else, most people don't know if they love it or hate it, which is sort of the definition of the type of plant for here. The offsets all had quite large spines, but none ave quite lived up to this plant.

That'll take some beating Chris!

I loved my Tacca chantrieri but it was far from beautiful...................

Despite people calling it hideous there was no shortage of takers when I had to get rid of it (having two flower spikes emerging may have helped). It had to go though as there was no suitable spot for it when I moved here (it was five foot across).

When I moved here I bought three clumps of Digitalis parviflora "Milk Chocolate" with me....................

Despite being described as a biennial mine are now four years old and survived being dug up and moving to the other side of town. Forming a nice big clump now, I really love this for no reason other than it's different.

Another somewhat ugly (or sinister maybe) Digitalis is my D.lanata................

Dracunculus vulgaris is rather pig ugly, but there's a thoroughly childish reason why I grow it!
