It's been a good many years since I last visited Hodnet. Thanks for the pics - I must try and arrange my next trip home to coincide with one of their open days.

I must confess that I had to Google Hodnet Hall. Not quite a day trip for me!

That is a lovely set of photos Charlie, the pond shots are great. Thanks for taking the time to post them.

Hi Flounder
I think you will find its Maianthemum racemosa, fantastic plant doing well in my sandy soil . Can imagine the smell in that area with such a large clump - lovely. Wish I could grow those Meconopsis but it would be a waste of time here

Is this another of those name changes? the gardener there was calling it Smilacina racemosa, but its a particular form and I know several of the nurseries at the plant sale had bought it in only to discover theirs was an inferior clone.

I thought it would need wet to do well but if its coping with your sandy soil maybe its worth a punt, certainly looked and smelt wonderful

I believe that is the old name Charlie. I bought it as an alternative for polygonatum which is anihilated by molluscs and larvae by June and has been untouched by both for two years. I bought mine from Hardy Plants near Winchester and have to say it has come on brilliantly smells amazing in the evening. If I can grow it in my sandy rubbish I would say it must be bombproof - well worth a try Charlie

Wish now I had weaseled a pot full off the gardener, he had several secreted away in one of his greenhouses, still there is always next year!
