Salvia help

Post by MartinNicklin »

This is going to be a very long shot indeed and I doubt that I will get an answer unless anyone saved the image! I, like everyone else, used to love the posts of the fondly remembered David Feix on GOTE with his eclectic mix of amazing plants. He once posted an image of a very large, voluptuous flowering blue or purple salvia of almost shrub-like proportions. I think I made a comment about it but didn't note the species.
... well I said it would be a long shot!!!

Thanks Charlie but I don’t think I can. I’m not on FB and it cuts me off when I try to scroll down!

I can't help with one of David's pictures, but I think he posted on Salvia mexicana 'Limelight' .

Was that it?

If so, be aware it doesn't start reliably to flower under UK conditions until November.

Can you remember roughly when Martin? I can still see his Facebook feed but there is a lot of it as it wasn't restricted to plants!

Several examples of S mexicana, including Limelight here http://www.robinssalvias.com/m.htm perhaps one rings a bell.

I see the late and much missed Robin Middleton in the above link gives Limelight as flowering from August. Hotter summers in England I guess.

Thanks for all these replies. The Salvia pages are great Nigel but my abiding memory is of the whole voluptuous plant, quite architectural and it was the show given by the plant in its entirety which so impressed me. Chad the S mexicana Limelight does not ring a bell but it’s a great plant and I would certainly give it space. Charlie it would have been a couple of years ago. I commented on how stunning it was. I’m sure someone either on here (although I did a search and couldn’t find it) or on GOTE was growing a similarly impressive big blue Salvia here in the UK. It was definitely not one of the easily obtainable varieties because I remember looking upDavid’s plant and nowhere was selling it in the UK. It doesn’t have to be hardy as it would be in my greenhouse. It was shrub like in stature rather than the narrow upright spires of the taller blues we get here ( such as the guaraniticas).
I ask because although I’ve never been “into” Salvias this one really struck me and stupidly I didn’t note its name. I’m at Hodnet Hall Plant Hunter’s fair in a couple of weeks and a seller of unusual and rare Salvias will be there and I was hoping they could help. Still, at least they have reserved a dombeyi for me after carelessly losing my lovely plant a couple of years ago but I’d love to find out what David’s plant was.
BTW I’m not on FB so it boots me off when I try to scroll down David’s pages. However, I found another site with loads of his images - 95 or so pages with about a million pics on each page. Needless to say, this needs tackling in chunks!

Thank you for all your help … and it has helped. The growers Ian and Theresa Moss who specialise in unusual Salvias will be at Hodnet so I asked them to look at this thread if they were interested. They did and they recommend S mexicana Lolita based on the descriptions and your suggestions. I’m short of blue and purple in the garden and I think this looks just the ticket in terms of colour and statuesque form (7ft apparently). The name doesn’t ring a bell but it’s the closest I can get to the plant wedged in my memory so thanks for the help.
They gave me permission to show this photo of their plant:
