Is this Indigofera?

Post by ian s »

We saw this in a front garden in Germany and searching the internet by photo comes up with both I. heterantha and I. himalayensis. Is it, or maybe something else? I haven't noticed these growing here and would like to find out if it's worth trying it outside or not.

I had it for many years but lost it due to it getting overwhelmed by other plants, it went through several hard winters. not sure which species it was I am afraid I liberated the seed from Powis Castle years ago!

It is indeed and both of those species are fairly easily available. Regarding hardiness mine has been outside for the 7 or so years I have been here and has been totally hardy, easily getting down to -10. It’s a pretty plant in flower and leaf and this year has been especially floriferous over several months so I would heartily recommend it.
For me it grows extremely rampantly and needs hacking back by several feet several times a year.

Looks very much like Indigofera howellii to me. Beautiful plant.

Yes, I did think the flower spikes looked a little longer than mine. Pan Global used to list a cross between howellii and pendula called Claret Cascade which looked lovely. I've always lusted after pendula but I think the quality of flower spike and depth of colour must depend on getting the right clone. Some seem a wishy-washy colour and of feeble stature but the good ones are quite stunning. The issue is that, unlike heterantha and himalayensis, they are not easy to get hold of!

PS I've just been looking at Claret Cascade on the net and decided I want one (!!!)so if anyone knows of a UK supplier (doubtful!) or, even more doubtful, someone has is and can propagate it, I'd be happy to pay or swap.
