Bessera elegans

Here's the latest of my noteworthy (IMO) bulbs showing off its first bloom.................

Bessera elegans is easily grown. Takes a couple of years to bulk the pot up, but keep 'em frost free and dry over the winter and that's easily done.

Flower stems grow to about 30/40cm, with lax thin foliage that is nowt to shout about. It's one of those plants that I grow on in the greenhouse until blooming then place in a prominent spot in the garden.
Here's the PBS page...................

Very easily grown if you follow the basics.

For several years I had small clumps of Bessera growing in thin soil on top of a low wall here. They popped up here and there, between and through other drought tolerant plants and their sudden appearance was as welcome as it was surprising. They haven't put in an appearance yet and in view of last year's rain, may have died out . For a sudden sparkle of fire-cracker colour you can't beat it.
