Cycad flushing

Post by Chrisg »

I have three cycads, small , medium and large. Haven't quite managed to get them to flush every year, but they alternate, the two smaller ones one year, the large one the next. This year it is the turn of the large one.

This one is outside all year without any protection, the fronds tend to die of the two winters, so when it comes to the next flush they look pretty bad. I keep meaning to cover it over winter, but always forget.

If only they could look like that all the time, I am afraid I just can't put up with how they look after a couple of cold winters, but I can see that a nice large one it a pot would be worth dragging in and out - looking very good now

Charlie, it's the same here, after two winters outside the leaves look like the photo. The good thing that I seem to manage to get a new flush every other year, so by the time they look bad I simply cut them off and let the new flush take over.

Last year I tried a rain cover over one for the first time and that was enough to keep the leaves looking pristine. Keeping the snow off made big difference.
