Persea thunbergii

Post by AndyC »

I love the taste of Avacardo so it is a pity that this species doesn't produce any fruit but the new leaves do look good enough to eat.

The cold winter of 2010/11 scorched the foliage but other than that this plant has proven to be perfectly hardy for me.

I had no idea this existed! yet another plant to look into. I shall proceed with caution as many of the other foliage shrubs I have tried here have failed to be impressed by the Cornish climate, but I do like the look of this one

If you do decide to try it Charlie it can be obtained locally, I bought mine from Hardy Exotics in 2007 and I think they still sell it.
Mine is planted on the south side of a large bamboo and on the east side of a fence so quite sheltered. It is still only about 5ft tall but that might be down to my poor soil.
As I said, it was damaged by the cold winter 2010/11 and to a much lesser degree the following winter but the last winter didn't touch it at all.
