Flowering Agaves again

Another year of flowering Agaves etc.
Agave wocomahi again. In 2024 I had a large one, from seed to flowering. It produced 1000s of viable seed. This year a smaller one produced a great flower but no seed pods.







However a pup of a year old went into flower with it’s parent and I would guess this is one of the worlds smallest flowering Agave wocomahi





A sort of horticultural tragedy…

Then a Trichocereus pachanoi which I’ve had since 2024 has not only doubled in size but sent a flower out as well. After it flowered a pup at the base emerged. Very exciting. I decided to plant it out today in its broken pot where the flowering Agave was.





Two Manfreda 'Macha Mocha' (xMangave) also flowered this summer. Pups are exploding from the stem all over.
You can just barely see them in pic 1. Bad light angle etc.
All in a very good summer for action. It’s also been extremely dry sunny and hot.

I think you were worried about your winter lows with these when I suggested them last year. Well it was a reasonably cold winter and spring here in Shropshire. We got down to at least -10 with plenty of frost and snow and, due to illness, I didn’t get round to covering the base of my plants. I usually put a bit of straw around the necks and hold in place with bark. Not only did they all survive, I’ve had the biggest and best blooms so far.

Hi Martin, your Agapanthus collection does your hard work credit. I’ve been stumped by them over the years and have almost give up. We get winter temps down to about -7 - -9c every winter. I can only assume that a -10c in the UK has a different feel to it than the same here in Germany. A -10c here and there’s not a single whisper outside and everything starts cracking. I have none the less 2 agapanthus. The oldest I replanted into a larger pot and this year gave me a real show. No watering in the 2 months of rainless and relentless heat. The other whispered along, gave a half hearted show and then just sat there. This one I watered every time I was out there with the can and I think that was its downfall.
I seem to recall briefly reading of your health issues a little while ago. I have had the same issue and have had a lot of treatments for it. The cancer is gone thankfully, but it took a lot of doing. I hope you’re well now.

Thanks Andrew. It’s astonishing how many men have or have had it. I had a prostatectomy and got over that very quickly. The histology report stated that “ cancer was found outside the prostate in contrast to what the MRI suggested.” I remain positive but obviously will need regular PSA tests. Thanks for asking and I hope your journey continues to be a positive one.
