2 variegations that are pretty good

Post by Andrew in Germany »

Canna stuttgart is turning out alright this year for the very first time in my possession. A bit of leaf burn but some leaves are standing up to the sun.

Agave medio-picta Alba.
I was looking at it this morning in the sun admiring it, thinking it is a very quiet thing, not needing much attention at all and in the winter kept dry and above freezing and it does very well. I think it’s got a nice shape.

Nice, in particular the agave. And look at all those offsets!
I can hear Paul grumbling...

It’s strange how variegation divides people. I have a friend who is an artist and she really dislikes variegation. She hated my Catalpa pulverulenta which to me is utterly lovely. I would have thought bold splashes of colour would appeal to those creative people amongst us.
Agave Americana medio-picta alba is particularly striking, especially when large. Unsurprisingly, I got mine from this friend! In fact, I still have a largish collection of variegated agaves and I find them very striking, above all Agave v-r White Rhino which is a very neat looking plant, almost unreal looking in its perfectness … but I find it painfully slow.
Your Stuttgart looks superb and that’s what I wanted from mine. I’m going to invest in new roots next year.
I got this from a local garden centre and I’m sure this would horrify some people (although the fact that the esteemed Derry Watkins at Special Plants Nursery offers it might sway them to accept it!). I think it’s lovely!

PS not to mention the variegated Brug behind it … oh and the variegated Trachelospermum! Hi Paul! ;) ;)

This thread is a bit like a road accident. I don't want to look but can't help myself.

8-) Paul, many years ago I can remember visiting you and walking around your garden. You had I think 3 A. medio pictas in statuesque iron(?) planters as a sort of entrance to another part of garden. Not to the area however where you were growing a lovely variegated Musa basjoo. It was that stunning majestic dignified look oozing out of those agaves that made me want to get one.

So…really, this post is your fault! You caused the accident as it were!!

I reckon Paul is "having us on" and he loves variegation. In fact, I would bet he's variegated himself: arms, legs, back and chest (I'll stop there!) covered with tattoos of variegated succulents.
